AFM Executive Director, Chaplain Kenneth Koon was eating pizza just outside the gate at Ft Dix, New Jersey on a Monday night in August of 2014 as he prepped his co-trainers for a suicide intervention workshop the next day. Suddenly his eyes were riveted to the TV screen with breaking news that Robin Williams had died of an apparent suicide. Says Koon, "I was very saddened to hear of the death of Robin Williams. My phone immediately started vibrating off the table with dozens of people texting me to let me know of the suicide of this beloved comedian. I finally had to turn the phone off. I couldn't finish my pizza and had a very hard time sleeping that night. Even though this is the arena I dwell in every day of my life (working with those on the edge of the abyss) I knew that even more needed to be done."
Upon returning home, Chaplain Koon immediately established Restore Laughter as an AFM special project on August 13, 2014 with a singular purpose of providing veterans and their spouses with an evening of laughter and the opportunity to re-engage in the mission of life.
Your support of the Restore Laughter Project makes it possible for veterans and their spouses to enjoy weekend restoration retreats and other events specifically focused on building friendships and strengthening personal resilience.
